JOB TITLE: CARE ASSISTANT

REPORTING TO: MANAGER/ DEPUTY MANAGER/SENIOR STAFF

JOB PURPOSE: TO ASSIST IN THE PROVISION OF QUALITY CARE TO ELDERLY RESIDENTS IN CARE SETTING

Skills Knowledge and Qualifications

‍

‍Essential:

Genuine interest in working within care of elderly persons

Ability to work as part of a team

Attending mandatory training

Willingness to attend vocational training programmes

Desired:

Have SVQ Level II or III or working towards minimum SVQ Level II.

Experience in working with elderly persons in a care setting.

‍

Outline of Duties

1. Assist/support residents with all aspects of personal care in accordance with individual needs, adopting role of keyworker and carer.
2. Assist/support residents in all aspects of care needs, including physical, emotional, social and spiritual, ensuring that they retain their comfort and dignity.
3. Promote equality for residents ensuring that their individuality, confidentiality, privacy, choice and rights are respected at all times.
4. Provide the support required to enable residents to be active as contributors to their own personal care plan.
5. Support and assist residents to maintain social contact with family and friends and make use of services and information available to them.
6. Participate in group or one to one to promote therapeutic meaningful recreational activities.
7. Assist in the promotion of continence.
8. Assist residents with individual dietary requirements ensuring preferences, special diets and any cultural dietary needs are respected.
9. Assist in the serving of food and drink.
10. Clean/wash up as required.
11. Record dietary/fluid intake/output as instructed by senior staff.
12. Assist in the delivery of care for residents at end stage of life or with a progressive illness.
13. Assist with last offices.  Ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and bereaved.
14. Answer call system, giving assistance as required.  Answer the door and telephone appropriately.  Respond accordingly and pass on messages promptly.
15. Under the supervision and guidance of senior care staff, report on well-being of residents.
16. Carry out regular checks on residents at intervals determined by senior staff members
17. Observe care planning needs for individual residents and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with company policies and procedures.
18. Ensure correct use of equipment e.g. hoists and wheelchairs. Participate in safety checks and cleaning of equipment including hearing aids/spectacles.
19. Dispose of waste as per company policies and procedures.
20. Escort residents where required, to healthcare appointments and social events if required.
21. Make visitors feel welcome. Provide refreshments as and when required.
22. Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with resident’s personal and financial affairs. Avoid abuse of privileged relationship with residents. Promptly report any concerns of abuse as per company policies and procedures.

Participate in staff and resident’s meetings as and when required.

Participate in the day to day staff communication

Health and Safety

Contribute to the health, safety and security of all residents and colleagues, ensuring the environment remains clean, tidy and free from hazards.

Be aware of and ensure the implementation of the company’s health and safety policy and emergency and fire procedures.

Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.  Report immediately to home manager or person in charge any illness of infectious nature.

Report to home manager, person in charge or handy person, any faulty appliances, equipment, furniture or any potential hazard.

Report any accident incurred by resident, self or others.

General

Promote and ensure the good name of the home.

Ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.

Notify the home manager or person in charge as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty and of your return to work.

Adhere to all company policies and procedures within defined time scales.

Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably be assigned to you.

Training and Development

Participate in supervision sessions and be willing to be active in your own development, acquiring new skills and ongoing training.

Maintain professional knowledge and competence.

Attend mandatory training days/courses on or off site.

Participate in relevant SVQ training to achieve required qualifications.

You will be required to register and conduct your working practices with the Scottish Social Services Codes of Practice.
